Italian Nicola Rizzoli has been handed the task of refereeing Sunday’s World Cup final between Germany and Argentina.

The decision was announced this evening by FIFA, with the Serie A official given the nod to preside over world football’s showpiece match at the Maracana.

“We choose the best referees for the best matches, and the Italian will referee the final,” Jim Boyce, the chairman of FIFA’s refereeing committee, said of the decision.

As such, Rizzoli will become the third Italian to take charge of a World Cup final, following in the footsteps of Sergio Gonella in 1978 and Pierluigi Collina in 2002.
