Lazio fans were barred from making the trip to Marseille, but Luis Alberto had to be protected by riot police when taking a corner, as Olympique fans hurled objects.

Europa League | Marseille 2-2 Lazio: Immobile grabs a point

The decision to ban all supporters from making the journey or even crossing the border had caused some controversy, especially as the Minister for the Interior had explained his order by citing far-right elements of the fanbase.

Olympique Marseille fans were barred from attending the first game at the Olimpico and are notorious for sparking riots.

There was already a section of the stands at the Stade Velodrome this evening that was closed by UEFA following crowd trouble against Galatasaray earlier in the Europa League campaign.

The club filled that section with 10,000 local children and their guardians.

However, the rest of the fanbase continued to cause problems, as Luis Alberto had to be protected by police with a riot shield when taking a corner, as he was being pelted with objects thrown from the stands.

Marseille supporters also have a suspended sentence to deduct points in Ligue 1 following riots in games against Paris Saint-Germain and Nice.

  1. Its clear lazio fans were banned more as protective measure as marseille knew given their own fans behavior a riot would erupt

  2. @Bob…

    Absolutely correct!

The hypocricy of tge French. At least Lazio barred Marseille fans due to CoVid protocol restrictions.

  3. Shameful behavior. Did this sort of thing happen in Rome? No. Yet, somehow Lazio are still portrayed as the bad guys by the media.

  4. @Pietro…

Those have been my arguments as well. Thank you for speaking to common sense in reporting.

However, the vitriol I receive just hoes to show how feeble minded we in western society have become.

  5. @Peo: That’s it exactly. Both teams have issues with their supporters and I suspect the French police have enough trouble dealing with the Marseille fans without adding Lazio fans in to the mix.

  6. @DB Milan so the solution is to name all Laziale fascists and ban them from entering the country?

    I thought Milanisti are brighter..

  7. Serie A fans are always portrayed as the bad boys of Europe.. .Clearly other parts of Europe have their share of badly behaved fans…

  8. @Burky: Where did I say that? Honestly, if you read the comment without making assumptions, this would be much easier. You insulted your own intelligence far more than mine.

Both Lazio and Marseille have problems with fans (not all fans, OBVIOUSLY), both are well known for it. That, I imagine, is why French police asked for Lazio to leave the fans at home, They didn’t want double trouble. Other clubs also have problems before I get jumped on but these are the clubs mentioned in the article. I trust that has been spelled out enough for you Burky.

  9. BTW how the hell is a commentin saying “Dirty French” still up? The moderation on this site has gone to the dogs.
