Rimini President Giorgio Grassi has resigned in protest of the decision to relegate his club to Serie D via algorithm.

Rimini, along with Gozzano and Rieta, were demoted from Serie C today, owing to their placings at the bottom of each three groups.

However, the Biancorossi were relegated despite having the same number of points and an equal goal difference to Fano directly above them.

The two teams were also due to play at Rimini’s ground, as one of the 11 games left to play.

The situation prompted Grassi to announce this evening that he would be standing down as the club’s patron after four-and-a-half years of service.

During that time, he oversaw a buyout of the club financed by cryptocurrency and ‘offered’ Loris Karius a contract to revive his career after he cost Liverpool the Champions League in 2018.

Grassi also confirmed Rimini were pursuing legal action in the form of an appeal to the Guarantee Board of the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI).
