Former Roma full-back John Arne Riise declares “Francesco Totti is a God”.
Er Pupone could be on the verge of leaving the Giallorossi after 27 years, as he’s in dispute with the club’s board and Coach Luciano Spalletti.
“With all due respect to the other players, Totti is a God,” Riise told Goal.
“I knew him before I came to Roma, but as a teammate he surprised me. He’s a very nice lad, very polite. He likes to joke and help his teammates.
“Of course, if I’m honest, his English was terrible so communicating with him wasn’t easy, but he was always available and his door was always open.
“It’s really hard to imagine Rome without its king.
“Does he have too much influence? I didn’t get that impression in my time at Roma. For us players it was certainly better to have him on the pitch, because his presence gave us security.
“Totti did everything the other players did, he wasn’t treated specially, both in terms of training and the matches.”
Riise also played for Liverpool, who had a club legend of their own leave last summer in the form of Steven Gerrard, how do the two compare?
“They’re both great leaders. Gerrard is a captain on the pitch though, with his great charisma and the way he always plays at the maximum.
“Totti’s strong presence isn’t just felt during the games though, but also in training and away from the pitch.”
