Former Roma left-back John Arne Riise has been confirmed as the new sporting director of Maltese club Birkirkara FC.

A statement on Birkirkara’s official website explains the role has been created for Riise, who was promoting his new biography ‘Running Man’ only a few weeks ago, managing to fit in an appearance on our podcast.

“John shall work together with the Club Technical Director, Mr. Michael Valenzia and Senior Team Manager, Mr. Jeffrey Farrugia in a new set-up which shall commence with immediate effect,” it read.

“Further details of the clubs plans for the future shall be published in the next few days.”

The 38-year-old made 133 appearances for Roma between 2008 and 2011 but is arguably best known for his seven-season spell with Liverpool, where he won the Champions League in 2005.

This marks the first non-playing role in the Norwegian’s career, while Birkikara are four-time Maltese League winners.

They most recently lifted the title five years ago and are currently sixth out of 14 teams after 13 rounds of fixtures.
