Torino midfielder Samuele Ricci wants to become a ‘permanent part’ of Italy’s national team and insists that being cut from the final 26-man squad list for the Euros has given him further motivation.

Ricci had been included by CT Luciano Spalletti in Italy’s preliminary 29-man squad for EURO 2024 but was cut from the final squad list.

Getting regular playing time for the Azzurri is one of Ricci’s targets this season.

“I want to do well with Torino and reach the high spots in the Serie A table,” the 22-year-old told Gazzetta.

“Another objective is to be a permanent part of the national team. The exclusion from the Euro squad has given me the motivation to do even more, so I won’t be cut out again.”

Torino have hired Paolo Vanoli as their new head coach after parting company with Ivan Juric.

“He’s a very prepared coach and he’s left a good impression on me and my teammates. If we understand his playing style, I am sure we’ll get great satisfaction,” said Ricci.

“We are in sync with the staff members and there are all the ingredients to do well.

“I’m just at the beginning, I think I can improve in many things, especially with a new playing style,” the midfielder continued.

“The coach is trying Linetty and me as playmakers. He gives a lot of advice regarding positioning because this role was interpreted differently last season.

“I’ve always been fascinated by this role. I’ve been playing in this position since I was a kid. A playmaker has key tasks. I must move the ball and take responsibility. I am ready for it.”
