Mateo Retegui is making his way back to Argentina after a massively successful first trip away with the Italian national team over the most recent international break.

Retegui will rejoin the rest of the Tigre squad in the Argentine Primera Division for the rest of the season, where he has already notched up six goals from eight league matches this calendar year.

During his time in Europe, the recently naturalised Retegui scored on his first two outings for the Azzurri, becoming only the fourth player in history to achieve that feat.

He also became the first player to score on his debut for Italy whilst playing club football outside of Europe.

Speaking to local reporters before getting on a flight to return to Argentina, Retegui spoke of his pride in being selected to represent the Azzurri over the international break.

He told the media: “I felt at home, it was a great happiness and pride to wear the Italy shirt. I was welcomed incredibly well, I thank coach Mancini and my new team-mates.”

Retegui could be in line to return to Europe at the start of the summer to take part in the nations league semi-final against Spain on June 15 if Roberto Mancini were to call him up.

There have also been a flood of transfer rumours in recent days linking the 23-year-old with a permanent move to Europe, with particularly strong links to either one of Inter or Milan
