Genoa are continuing in their quest to land the signature of Italy international Mateo Retegui and are set for a new round of negotiations with parent club Boca Juniors in the coming days according to reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport

Representatives from both Genoa and Boca Juniors met to discuss the availability of Retegui on Monday, who is valued at around the €15m mark, although a final agreement has not yet been settled upon.

Retegui has been on loan with Tigre in the Argentine Primera Division since 2022, registering 25 goals from 35 league appearances, including six from eight so far in 2023.

The 24-year-old’s salary could be an issue for Genoa, as he currently earns over €1m per season, which La Gazzetta confirms falls outside of the team’s internal salary cap.

A move to Serie A would also please Italy CT Roberto Mancini, who handed Retegui his international debut against England in March.

Retegui went on to score against Gareth Southgate’s side, before continuing his 100% record against Malta a few days later.

La Gazzetta writes that playing in Italy would provide Mancini and his staff with the opportunity of following Retegui’s development on a closer and more regular basis.

However, Genoa still have alternatives in the event that they are unable to reach an agreement with Boca Juniors. La Gazzetta reports that Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta is of interest, as is 20-year-old Noah Ohio of Sandar Liege.

There is also mention of a possible return for Krzysztof Piatek, who spent the 2018-19 season on Genoa’s books before moving onto Milan the following year.
