Italy international Mateo Retegui became the joint-top goalscorer in the Argentina Primera Division after netting a 31st minute penalty for Tigre during their 2-1 loss to Independiente on Saturday evening.

The recently capped 24-year-old is now up to 10 league goals for the season from 13 appearances in the division, which has drawn him level with Michael Santos of Club Atletico Tallares, who has 10 from 15 outings in the 2023 season.

Retegui has found the net from the spot in the 3-0 Copa Sudamericana win over Puerto Cabello at the beginning of May, taking his club tally up to 11 for the calendar year from all competitions.

Including his two goals from his first two starts with the Azzurri after being called up by CT Roberto Mancini for the first time in March, Retegui’s tally for club and country stands at 13 so far in 2023.

There had been recent concerns surrounding a knee injury that Retegui picked up midway through April, however, his layoff lasted only three games and, despite being left out of the squad to face Newell’s Old Boys, he has scored on all three of his appearances since his return.

Tigre are now up to 12th in the Primera Division, with 21 points from their first 16 matches in the 28-team competition.
