Retegui admits Italy and Milito influenced Genoa transfer decision

Mateo Retegui will be ‘closer’ to Italy boss Roberto Mancini after joining Genoa and reveals he spoke to Diego Milito before accepting the Rossoblu’s offer.

The Italy international spoke to ESPN before boarding for Italy from Argentina on Sunday.

“I am very happy with what’s going on. I’ve been dreaming of playing in Europe since I was a kid,” he said.

“I am happy, but also a bit sad about the situation of the club [Tigre] but I’ll be forever grateful for what they did for me.

“I took this decision with my family and we think it’s the best choice. I am joining a big club and I am happy. I want to enjoy my time there and learn. I have a great desire to win.”

Retegui made his Italy debut in March and has scored two goals in his first three appearances with the Azzurri.

“Of course, the decision had to do with the national team too,” the striker admitted.

“I’ll play for an Italian club, I’ll be closer and do my best to improve, hoping to be called the next time, I am always available.”

Did Diego Milito, a former Genoa striker, influence his decision?

“It had an impact too. The family has been in touch with Diego and me too. He had nice words for the club and the city and I am happy. I hope to prove that I’m up to the task.

“I am calm, I want to learn and play and win. Hopefully Serie A is the ideal league for me. I want to enjoy this.”
