Reports from the Italian capital claim Roma’s owners are negotiating the possible sale of the club to investors in Saudi Arabia.

La Repubblica details how a meeting was held involving the head of the Giallorossi’s legal department in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh on Tuesday. Various topics were discussed, including the Riyadh Season sponsorship, but the conversation went deeper.

Eric Williamson, the right-hand man of Roma’s owners the Friedkins and a board member of Roma, travelled from the United States to attend the meeting, suggesting something larger scale was being discussed.

Two different groups are interested in purchasing Roma from Dan Friedkin – the government-owned Public Investment Fund, who already own Newcastle United, and private investor Turki Alalshikh, who is a royal adviser and president of the General Entertainment Authority.

At this stage, the Friedkins are hoping to enter into a partnership with one of the two Saudi groups, wanting to remain in control of Roma, but both PIF and Alalshikh want 100% of the club’s shares, preparing offers of circa €900m plus €300m linked to the construction of the new stadium.

Things are still at their early stages, but updates are expected in the coming months.
