Claudio Ranieri has reportedly been looking for an experienced defender and Tonelli has been struggling to break through at the San Paolo.

As the report claims he is not in Gennaro Gattuso’s plans for the rest of the season, the former Empoli man could head back to Sampdoria on another loan deal this winter.

The broadcaster claims the deal is only formalities away and we await confirmation. Tonelli has yet to feature in Serie A this campaign and has only collected seven league matches for the Azzurri since he joined the club in a €10m transfer from Empoli in July 2016.
