The icy front between current coach Gennaro Gattuso and President Aurelio De Laurentiis is beginning to thaw, and the former Milan coach doesn’t seem so certain to leave after all.

Gattuso has appreciated the trust of sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli and the affection of the players, overseeing a positive run to bring the club back into the battle for top four in Italy.

Napoli are currently third in Serie A, joint with Juventus and Milan, and the latest results has blown the Champions League battle wide open.

But Napoli have, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, already been in touch with Spalletti, and the former Roma tactician has asked for a salary of €4m a year to accept the job in Naples.

His experience has reportedly been identified as the perfect fit to help Napoli take the next step, should the Azzurri qualify for the Champions League.

But De Laurentiis has, according to the newspaper, offered the former Zenit St Petersburg coach a yearly salary of €2.5m, which is €1.5m lower than the request from Spalletti.

The newspaper claims Plan B would be to try and convince Spezia coach Vincenzo Italiano or Hellas Verona tactician Ivan Juric.

Empoli coach Alessio Dionisi has also been mentioned as a possible candidate, should Gattuso leave the club.
