There are reports Sampdoria have decided to sack coach Roberto D’Aversa and will bring back Marco Giampaolo, maybe in time for Tuesday’s Coppa Italia game against Juventus.

The Blucerchiati are seemingly ready to pull the plug after three consecutive Serie A defeats.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the decision was made after last night’s home defeat to Torino.

Curiously, Giampaolo is still under contract with Torino, so negotiations must first be held with his former club to get him released.

This represents a return to Marassi for Giampaolo, who already had success here from 2016 to 2019 before leaving for an ill-fated spell at Milan.

Giampaolo didn’t last long at Torino either, as the 54-year-old arrived in August 2020 and was dismissed in January 2021.

He lasted just 20 competitive matches, overseeing four wins, seven draws and nine defeats.

If the deal can be done, then Sampdoria hope to have Giampaolo on the bench for Tuesday’s Coppa Italia Round of 16 tie against Juventus.

D’Aversa has a contract with Samp until June 2023 and was hired over the summer, but the three consecutive defeats to Cagliari, Napoli and Torino proved too much.

The coach oversaw seven victories, five draws and 12 losses.
