The defender has long been the most valuable players in the Partenopei squad and previous offers of over €100m were rejected from the likes of Manchester United and PSG.

His contract runs to June 2023 and there is no release clause.

Sportitalia and Gazzetta dello Sport transfer correspondent Pedullà claims Koulibaly wanted to extend his contract with a slightly improved salary of €7-8m per season.

However, Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis refused and instead put the Senegal international on the market.

Manchester City are the hot favourites to sign the 29-year-old, but that may well be put on the backburner if they put most of their finances into getting Lionel Messi from Barcelona.

Napoli’s asking price for Koulibaly is €75-80m, whereas the offer so far from City is €65m plus bonuses.
