An initial €8m offer had been turned down, but when the bid was raised above €10m the negotiations began in earnest.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport this evening, Sunderland are on the verge of completing the transfer for Giaccherini.

However, it is also reported that Paolo Di Canio’s club had an offer for Inter youth product Daniel Bessa rejected.

The 20-year-old Italian-Brazilian is an attacking midfielder who spent the last six months on loan at Vicenza, but suffered a knee injury.
