According to Sky Sport Italia, Roma had already intended on sacking Jose Mourinho after the chaotic Europa League Final defeat to Sevilla, as they were tired of his constant blaming of referees.

The decision to dismiss the coach was made this morning at the Trigoria training ground by Dan and Ryan Friedkin, who are taking a more hands-on approach to running the club.

There are now numerous reports about what happened behind the scenes over the last 24 hours and beyond, with Sky Sport Italia insisting the owners had thought about firing Mourinho at the end of last season when the coach lost the Europa League Final on penalties to Sevilla.

It wasn’t so much the result that irritated them, as his four-match ban for shouting abuse at the referee in the car park under the stadium and constant complaints about the officials in every tournament.

It is reported that Tiago Pinto had convinced the Friedkins to stick with Mourinho for the final season of his contract to June 2024.

However, with Tiago Pinto also confirming his imminent departure in February, there was nobody left to protect Mou.

There are even reports from Tuttomercatoweb that Tiago Pinto and CEO Lina Souloukou were not consulted about the decision to sack Mourinho, finding out only after it was already done.

The theme that comes through from the Friedkins and also many of the fans is that there are now “no more excuses” for the players, again implying that Mou trotted out one excuse after another for every setback.

The plan going forward is to stop bringing in players on loan or free agents with a terrible injury record, but instead to focus on youth and growing value with their performances, selling them on at a profit.

This will help them remain within Financial Fair Play parameters and make the most of the notoriously prolific Roma youth academy.
