Incredibly, Fiorentina’s search for a new coach has taken another twist, with reports they’ll leave Vincenzo Italiano at Spezia, going for Paulo Fonseca or Rafa Benitez.

The last few months have been absolutely chaotic for the Viola, who hired Gennaro Gattuso and then terminated his contract by mutual consent just three weeks later following a disagreement over transfer strategy.

They had been in advanced negotiations for well over a week now with Italiano, who only recently signed a contract extension with Spezia.

While it was believed this was just a matter of time, this afternoon RAI Toscana claimed that the deal was suddenly off and Fiorentina turning to a different target.

Instead, President Rocco Commisso now wants a foreign coach to inspire a different approach at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

The candidates are former Roma boss Paulo Fonseca, who had agreed terms with Tottenham Hotspur only to be dropped, and ex-Napoli coach Benitez, who has been linked with Everton.

Even Marcelo Bielsa is of interest, but considerably more difficult to wrest away from Leeds United.
