It’s the end of a very long journey for 52-year-old Semplici, as he took the SPAL job in December 2014 when the club was still in Serie C.
He took them to promotion into Serie B for the first time in 23 years, then the very next season achieved promotion into Serie A, ending their 49-year wait for a return to the top flight.
Semplici continued his remarkable achievements with SPAL, keeping them in Serie A for the 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20 campaigns.
This represents the first real club role of Di Biagio’s management career, as he was at the helm of the Italy Under-20 side from 2011-13 and the Under-21s from 2013-19.
The 48-year-old also had two games as caretaker manager on the senior Azzurri bench during the transition period between Giampiero Ventura and Roberto Mancini in 2018.
