World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro has reportedly terminated his deal with Guangzhou Evergrande and will leave China.

Chinese portal Sohu reports the former Italy international left Guangzhou by mutual consent, after the club proposed to terminate his deal to save money.

The financial crisis that hit Evergrande reportedly had strong cosequences on Guangzhou too, as they asked the Chinese government for help.

The club risked disappearing due to accumulated debts and the financial situation is, according to the report, why Cannavaro has terminated his deal with the club.

The coach was expected to stay on until December 2022 but will salute China after four years in the country.

The former Ballon d’Or winner was expected to continue training today, but the return was cancelled in order to save money.

Cannavaro reportedly accepted the proposed termination of his deal and team captain, Zheng Zhi, will take over the technical leadership in a player-coach role.

  1. Come back home where the game is lifeblood and not so readily discarded because it doesn’t fit into a business plan.
