Max Allegri could be about to return to football after reports his agent was spotted in negotiations with Benfica, where he would reunite with Angel Di Maria.

The Italian tactician was fired by Juventus just a day after winning the Coppa Italia in May, as his furious reaction to the director Cristiano Giuntoli, the fourth official and referee saw him tear off his jacket and tie on the touchline.

According to the Corriere dello Sport, agent Giovanni Branchini was spotted in Lisbon yesterday and was holding talks with Benfica.

Allegri would fit Benfica bill

The Portuguese club is currently trying to terminate its contract with coach Roger Schmidt by mutual consent and therefore require a replacement.

Curiously, Benfica will play against Juventus in the Champions League on January 29, along with Barcelona, Bologna, AS Monaco, Bayern Munich, Feyenoord, Atletico Madrid and Crvena Zvezda.

Allegri has already worked with former Juventus midfielder Di Maria, who just signed a contract extension at Benfica.

This would be Allegri’s first experience overseas, having won six Serie A titles between Milan and Juventus, five editions of the Coppa Italia and three Italian Supercups.

He had also been linked with a potential return to Milan, as Paulo Fonseca is struggling in his new role at San Siro.
