He was also due to be its vice chairman, with Real Madrid President Florentino Perez as the First Chairman.

It comes after multiple sources confirm Manchester United chief Edward Woodward announced he would step down at the end of the year, although it seems as if that had been the plan for some time.

Numerous clubs have or are considering the option of pulling out of the Super League, less than 48 hours after it was announced late Sunday night.

Chelsea and Manchester City were the first to fold, with Barcelona warning they would not ratify it without a vote from the Assembly of associates.

Atletico Madrid are also expected to pull away.

An emergency meeting of the 12 Super League clubs is set for tonight, with Real Madrid's Perez expected to make a statement at 23.30 local time (22.30 in the UK).
