Napoli patron Aurelio De Laurentiis reportedly wants to include a penalty of €7m in Gennaro Gattuso’s new deal at the San Paolo, to prevent the coach from leaving early.

Last night, multiple reports in Italian media claimed Gattuso has postponed signing an extension until at least the spring.

The reports claimed they agreed a basic principle to continue together until June 2023, but are in no rush signing the paperwork.

But today, La Gazzetta dello Sport claims the initial talks between the patron and the coach didn’t lead to anything because De Laurentiis wanted to protect himself from losing Gattuso before the potential contract expires.

The report claims that the Napoli President wants to insert a penalty in the coach’s contract of €7m in the event of a farewell.

Talks have therefore been pushed, and a new meeting will be required to solve the current situation at the San Paolo.
