Milan ‘have been following Renato Veiga for a long time,’ confirmed the Basel midfielder’s father and agent, but they are not the only ones.

The 20-year-old joined FC Basel last summer for €4.6m from Sporting CP and has made 25 competitive appearances this season, with two goals and one assist.

A defensive midfielder, he turns 21 in July and has seven caps for Portugal at Under-21 level.

“What I know is that Milan have been following Renato Veiga for a long time,” his father and representative Nelson Veiga told Numero Diez.

“Obviously, when the transfer window opens they could try to dive in, but right now they are interested and observing his performances carefully. However, there has not been any formal offer from Milan.”

The Rossoneri are bound to face a great deal of competition for Nelson Veiga from other interested parties.

“There are various clubs from the top five European leagues that we already had contact with, so we’ll see what happens. There are some clubs from Ligue 1, the Premier League, plus a different one from Milan in Serie A who have been interested in a while.

“There had been approaches in January, but along with the player, we decided to see out the season with Basel and wait until the summer.”

Renato Veiga injury concern

The player dislocated his ankle at the start of April.

“Renato Veiga is very ambitious, he is recovering from an injury and will return to the field in a few weeks. He then wants to take the next step in his career, if the conditions satisfy both him and Basel.”
