Inter will take on Juventus in the Supercoppa Italiana final tomorrow evening, their first time facing each other in this competition since 2005.

That was the first time that the two teams had met in the Supercoppa Italiana final, with the Bianconeri winning the 2004/05 league title – which was later stripped due to Calciopoli – and the Nerazzurri winning the Coppa Italia.

On a rainy August evening at the Stadio delle Alpi in Turin in 2005, the two teams battled it out for the Supercoppa Italiana trophy. Juventus coach Fabio Capello was looking for his fourth title in the competition, whilst Inter’s Roberto Mancini was chasing his first.

Below are the two starting lineups in that match:

Juventus (4-4-2): Chimenti; Zebina, Kovac, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Vieira, Emerson, Nedved; Ibrahimovic, Trezeguet

Inter (4-4-2): Toldo; Ze Maria, Cordoba, Materazzi, Favalli; Zanetti, Veron, Cambiasso, Stankovic; Adriano, Obafemi Martins

Juventus took the lead in the match in the first half, with Trezeguet scoring following an Ibrahimovic pass, but the referee incorrectly ruled the goal out for offside.

During the second half Toldo was on fire for the Nerazzurri, making a number of game-saving stops. Inter were also denied by Chimenti multiple times, forcing the match to go to extra time after it ended 0-0 at 90 minutes.

In the 96th minute, Adriano set up Veron, who fired the ball home to put the Nerazzurri 1-0 up. They held on and defended this lead, securing their second ever victory in the competition.

Juventus will be looking for revenge in tomorrow’s match at the San Siro, whilst Inter will be looking to repeat history.
