Paulo Dybala has agreed to sign for Roma, but there are reports this deal includes a release clause set at €20m.

The decision surprised many, as the Giallorossi are not in the Champions League this season, but are fresh from winning the debut edition of the Europa Conference League.

Jose Mourinho convinced La Joya to join as a free agent, signing a contract worth €6m per season including add-ons and performance-related bonuses.

It is expected to run for three years with an option for a fourth campaign.

However, Calciomercato.com claim the contract also includes a release clause worth €20m that will be active from the summer of 2023.

That suggests Dybala wanted a way out in case Roma fail to qualify for the Champions League next season.

He had been expected to join Inter, who hit the brakes after bringing in Romelu Lukaku on loan from Chelsea and failing to terminate their deal with Alexis Sanchez by mutual consent.

Milan and Napoli had also shown interest, but baulked at the wage demands.

  1. Don Beppe is still a genius. He knew unfortunately that this year, there was no space for him. With Inter not being able to get rid of Sanchez and one of Dzeko or Correa, he would have to wait. He will be an Inter player in 2023, and will vacation in their treatment room, as Roma will not make it into the CL. Winning the third division of Europe has got them too giddy like @Fish and Chips Lord Allegri Patron Saint of Limey Ball. Inter, Milan, Napoli and PhD Max will make up the top 4.

  2. Haha he is ready to abandon the ship with 20 millions once they again finish 6th next season!

  3. My Lord… I agree with you on many things . Can’t see Napoli in the top 4 this year. I would say Roma may be formidable with the addition of Dybala. They can be an exciting team to watch as well.

  4. Unlikely that Napoli finishes above Roma this season unless ADL finds some serious reinforcements. At this moment, Roma are looking like a pretty strong candidate for 4th. The object for Roma is remaining healthy, Dybala included.

  5. With Juve rebuilding and Napoli losing their two best players and the heart of their team, Roma are definitely strong contenders for a top 4 finish. They play well together and have a real team spirit.

  6. I’d argue getting lukaku back is wiser than signing dybala. Great deal for Roma & Mou though, if dybala stays fit of course. Mou makes Roma reach a little higher, not settle with mediocrity like ADL’s Napoli.

  7. Dybala signed for Roma because he was impressed how the team outplayed his Juventus twice last season. (I am using word “outplayed”, because I can’t really say what Roma did to Juventus without being banned.)
If he wants revenge against the Zebras, Paolo came to the right place.

It will be difficult for Juventus to clinch fourth for the third straight season.
I am looking forward to Roma completely, eh… “outplaying” them this year.

  8. It’s good business for Roma whether he stays or goes. Worst case scenario – get a player on a free, pay his salary for 1 year (5-6mill), walk away with 14-15 million profit if he leaves. That’s 14-15 million from 0.

  9. He’s a fantastic addition to this Roma side & they’re going to qualify in CL with this squad. But if they don’t, still they will make more than 3x profit on their investment of €6m. It’s a win-win.
