Pepe Reina has revealed he was only at Milan because Gianluigi Donnarumma “had to leave” the Rossoneri.

The Italy international was in a transfer saga and linked away from the club when Reina was brought in to help the club in a difficult period.

The Italy international was in a transfer saga and linked away from the club when Reina was brought in to help the club in a difficult period.

The 37-year-old signed on a free transfer from Napoli in July 2018 and believed he would be the first choice at San Siro.

“I signed a year and a half ago,” Reina told Onda Cero. “Donnarumma had to leave, but in the end he stayed.

“So, I tried to do my best, both to play and to help Gigio grow. It’s a club that’s currently having difficulties on a sporting level. But they will soon return to being competitive.”

This month he moved to Aston Villa and has admitted it gave him the chance to “feel like a footballer” again.

“The Premier League is the most fun league,” Reina said. “I come here with the idea of helping out and to do well. I can play here, and I have the chance to still feel like a footballer.”
