The Spanish international spent the 2013-14 season on loan with the Partenopei, but opted to join Bayern Munich when his Liverpool contract expired.

After limited playing time in Bavaria, the goalkeeper has returned to San Paolo, and has given his thoughts on the season ahead.

“We have so much confidence in the team,” Reina told Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli.

“After the work done with [Coach Maurizio] Sarri in the pre-season training camp we’re fired-up and ready to make our debut in this League.

“It will take time to be at our best, we have some new faces, but this is a strong squad which is aiming high. It will be a competitive Napoli.

“All we can promise is a lot of passion and determination, that every Napoli player will give 100 per cent.

“Every competition, every trophy and every game is important at Napoli. On Sunday we start against Sassuolo. I spoke to Paolo Cannavaro, who is like a brother to me, and I jokingly told him that I won’t talk to him until Monday!”

Reina also explained why he decided to return to the Vesuviani for this season.

“The affection the fans showed me all year through social networks, and the President [Aurelio De Laurentiis] taking a personal interest was decisive.

“A competitive team like Napoli which always wants to win is difficult to turn down.”
