Tijjani Reijnders opened up about his dream at Milan, his admiration of Lionel Messi and relationship with coach Stefano Pioli.

The 24-year-old Dutch midfielder joined the Rossoneri from AZ Alkmaar last week in a deal worth around €20m, signing a five-year contract. He impressed in the Eredivisie last season, scoring three goals and providing eight assists across 34 games.

Pioli is expected to switch Milan to a 4-3-3 system for next season, a system Reijnders knows well. He is one of six signings completed by the club this summer alongside Marco Sportiello, Luka Romero, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Christian Pulisic and Noah Okafor.

Speaking to Sky Sports Italia, Reijnders first discussed how he feels a week after joining Milan.

“The thing I immediately perceived is how much Milan are a big club, world-class. It’s a very different reality than where I come from.

“The thing that struck me the most were the fans, it’s nice to see so much passion towards both the team and the players.”

He touched on his childhood memories of the club.

“When I was younger, I watched Milan on TV and even then I understood that they were a great club, being here now makes me very proud.

“The greatest Dutchman in Milan’s history was certainly Marco Van Basten. One of the best in the Netherlands.”

The 24-year-old midfielder spoke about his admiration of Messi.

“Lionel Messi, for me his style of play has always been incredible, and what he has done in his career is unique.”

He was asked about his relationship with Pioli.

“The relationship is very good. Before coming here, I spoke with him and we immediately had a good feeling, both on and off the pitch. I really hope we can work together for many years.”

Finally, Reijnders discussed his dream at Milan.

“Winning the Champions League. And now trying to win the Scudetto. We’ve all had these dreams since we were children. We’ll try to make them come true.”
