Reggiana owner and baseball legend Mike Piazza has accused ‘a few corrupt and dirty individuals’ of eliminating his club from the Serie C playoffs.

Reggiana lost 2-1 to Siena in their playoff quarter-final on Sunday after the Tuscans were awarded a penalty in the 10th minute of injury time, despite their No 5 appearing to have been the one fouled and not vice versa.

“I was not available last night to give a comment because I had to return home with my children,” Piazza wrote on the Granata’s official website.

“I feel sorry for them that they had to witness such corruption and incompetence I am throughly disgusted and enraged I truly feel sorry for our fans, they don’t deserve this.

“It is truly a sad day for Italy and Italian soccer. I will never understand how a few corrupt dirty individuals can make such a beautiful thing so repulsive and ugly. I am sick to my stomach!”

The match was followed by angry Reggiana fans invading the pitch, forcing police to intervene.
