A proposal to hold a referendum on a potential new Milan stadium in the suburb of San Donato has been rejected by the local council.

In July, Milan acquired land in San Donato through their purchase of Sportlifecity, with development reportedly having already been approved.

However, there are still plenty of bureaucratic hoops to jump through before Milan can even think about breaking ground on the new development.

A consultative referendum was suggested by Lega Calcio, but the municipal council of San Donato Milanese have since shut that idea down, supported by councillors from the Democratic Party and from ‘Together for San Donato’. The vast majority of them voted against the motion.

Commenting on the matter, local mayor Francesco Squeri said: “I have the duty to see the project from all angles and then, together with the majority, we will decide, involving the citizens, whether the stadium will have more positive effects or negative ones.

“I am surprised that those who are against the stadium don’t want to talk about the positive aspects, but there are also people who want the stadium.”

  1. Another reason why Italian football is left behind Premier League, La Liga & Bayern Munchen. Such a shame if big clubs like Milan & Inter can’t have their own stadiums.
