AIA chiefs won’t take action against InterMilan referee Maurizio Mariani as they believe he took the right decision by disallowing Ismael Bennacer’s goal yesterday.

The Algeria international saw a goal disallowed for offside after a VAR check yesterday when Inter were 2-0 up. Milan would have needed one more in the last 25 minutes to qualify for the Coppa Italia final if the goal stood.

Mariani’s decision has caused controversy and Milan coach Stefano Pioli complained after the final whistle saying that Pierre Kalulu didn’t interfere with play.

Inter vs. Milan: why Bennacer’s goal was disallowed – video

However, Calciomercato.com reports that referees’ chiefs believe Mariani took the right decision yesterday. The guidelines provided by the designator Gianluca Rocchi at the beginning of the season told referees to be strict with players in offside inside the penalty area in similar circumstances to last night’s.

Mariani saw Handanovic moving, trying to look for the ball kicked by Bennacer and this is one of the reasons he decided to disallow the goal. According to a report by Calciomercato.com, the VAR file could be made public by AIA in the coming days.

  1. He was looking for the ball amongst kalulu and a crowd (5 no less) of inter players obstructing his view, not just kalulu. In fact kalulu gets out of his before the ball is struck and after it. The goal should have stood.

  2. Any more outrages? And please don’t tell me you saw it better with videos we have seen so far or you know the rules better. I’m here with to watch you cry even more. 3… 2… 1…

  3. It doesn’t even matter any more – the teams aren’t going to be told to get back on the pitch and play the last 30mins again with the score at 2-1.

What’s done is done. Milan have the game against Lazio to worry about now.

  4. Shocker … lol

Condemning a referee is basically condemning themselves. They only condemn when they have no other choice, like with the MilanSpezia referee.

  5. It was a fair goal. They should have admitted it. But wouldn’t have changed the outcome. Hope the Viola can pull off an upset today.

  6. My suggestion – WHY NOT REMOVE THE OFFSIDE RULE ALTOGETHER? Does it make any sense to keep this rule any longer? What purpose does it serve exactly?
    Any comments on this suggestion?

  7. @michele santorini Never understood the purpose of the offside rule…it seems to be the constant source of controversy. At the very least, it should be made where it is less strict.

  8. kalulu he didnt touch the ball he moved there where more inter players there the goalkeeper didnt know what happened what hit them the referee change it to offside always milan take the blame spezia inter at that time 2 – 1 maybe milan win hope milan win the league if not im still milan fan till death forever

  9. There are rules to follow look just how tries to avoid his offside position after he’s know he’s offside that explains everything about him
he was active in the play up and disturbs the goalkeeper stop crying and move on
Nobody hears you complaining when the referees helping you
What a silly thing to complain at the referee

  10. @Jack

Justice for what? Learn the rules or switch sport. If you don’t fancy the offside rule you can watch handball, basketball or volleyball instead

  11. offside rule is to make the game more attacking an interesting, as it gives the defending team an incentive to push up. Otherwise defending would just be 11 player not even trying to push until the other team is within shooting range. And attacking would also be with less players, as the attacking team might well keep 2-3 players far back on their own side of the pitch. Because, this was how teams played in the 2-3-5 and 3-2-5 days. Therefore, offside was introduced. Without it the game would be extremely boring.

  12. AIA won’t apologize for a correct call being made but Lautaro should apologize for violating Milan‘s defence. How unsporting from Lautaro.

  13. Wouldn’t want to live in a Milanisti world. Imagine having to justify your own conclusion despite referees getting the call right.
