Italian sports paper hit out at RomaMilan referee Fabio Maresca, especially for a penalty kick he didn’t award to the Giallorossi.

Milan beat Roma 2-1 at the Stadio Olimpico last night, but the 40-year-old referee found himself in the middle of the storm, due to many controversial decisions.

The Rossoneri doubled their lead through a penalty kick earned by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who Roger Ibanez had fouled.

Mourinho storms off ‘before I get banned’

The former Atalanta defender collided with Ibrahimovic’s hip before touching the ball with his right foot. Maresca immediately awarded a spot-kick to Milan and confirmed his decision after an on-field review.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the penalty kick is legitimate, but VAR should have not called the referee because it was not a clear and obvious error.

However, according to Il Corriere dello Sport, Milan should have not been given a spot-kick, because Ibanez got on the ball with his tackle.

Mancini: ‘They laugh at this refereeing in the Premier League’

Both papers agree that the Giallorossi a spot-kick for a Simon Kjaer foul on Lorenzo Pellegrini. La Gazzetta dello Sport compared the contact to Denzel Dumfries’ foul on Alex Sandro in InterJuventus last week.

Another mistake highlighted by Italian media is the second yellow card shown to Theo Hernandez.

Maresca should have stopped Roma’s attack earlier for a foul on Rade Krunic.

  1. Even Italy’s papers can’t agree with each other. In my opinion, it wasn’t a penalty from Dumfries and it wasn’t a penalty here either, as this was even softer than that (both players mid-air and Pellegrini backing into Kjaer).

Anyway, there was a foul on Krunic before the red card and without that mistake (Theo’s red) there would be no potential Roma penalty at all. Milan put Roma to the sword 11 vs 11. It would’ve been a heavier scoreline if ref hadn’t gifted them the luxury of playing with a man up.

    Milan won fair and square.

  2. When the VAR is called, wouldn’t it be better if the decision is left to the VAR people and not to the referee?

  3. ‘However, according to Il Corriere dello Sport, Milan should have not been given a spot-kick, because Ibanez got on the ball with his tackle.’

HAHA! Ibanez clatters into Ibra before touching the ball, but it wasn’t a penalty. HAHA. OK.

  4. Dumfries tackle on Sandro is a foul no matter who you are biased for or against. He is late on the challenge, doesn’t even touch the ball and hits Alex Sandro at the bottom of his foot. You would have to be blind or actually be paid off by someone higher up to not give that as a foul. Anywhere else on the pitch, that is a foul. So why is that not a penalty if it is inside the box?

Ibanez foul on Ibrahimovic is also a penalty as we have seen in the reverse angle replays, Ibra touches the ball AWAY from Ibanez who then goes THROUGH Ibra in order to even get a slight touch. You can get the ball, which is fine, but you cannot go through someone just to get it. Imagine someone bulldozing thruogh your back and getting the ball and not getting a foul called?

It seems people especially in Italy and around Italian football, look for anything to complain about. No wonder Mourinho came back to Italy. It’s literally a country full of people like him.

  5. Whoever tells the Ibra foul is a penalty is just a milan fan! when u see this team had 20 penalties last season, it is obvious Milan is professional in diving! well, that’s why they are nothing in the champiosleague 🙂 they just lose and lose. last week VAR had to make the Bolognia 9 men so that Milan could win, because even with 10 man they would have lost :)))

  6. It’s a contact sport. And Ibanez won the ball. Yes Milan won fare and square. But this is not a penalty.l, and giving these soft penalties ruins the game for all clubs and fans, as 1 soft penalty seems to legitimise another and on and on we go go with bad refereeing decisions week in week out

  7. We should expect all sort of penalties in Serie A this season since Gianluca Rocci is the referee designator because himself he’s fond of soft penalties.
For the roma penalty I rather see the mistake of the VAR for not calling the referee to view the footage on the side monitor.
Referees would continue to cost some teams points due to avoidable mistakes if no action is taken, their mistakes is getting worse by every passing game.

  8. I think Italian premier league board should take inconsideration these matters and save refereeing trust in the league

  9. Ldn in a democratic country everybody is entitled to his opinion so please why don’t you shut your big mouth.

  10. How was Ibanez tackle not a foul ? He took the man out first. If he didn’t Ibra is 1-1 with Patricio. No matter who Ibanez plays for or Ibra, I call that a PK any day of the week.

Also, where’s Veretout’s red card for his tackle on Tonali at the end ? Fact is we could of been 3 or 4 goals up before Theo’s stupidity.

Mourinho and his bitch player’s and fan’s don’t mention thing’s like that do they ?
Enjoy mid table and re-watch the Bodo/Glimt match you load of amateurs.

  11. Stop complaining. Milan is better then Roma. Without a red card or the ibra penelty they would have run over them. Roma should be happy it wasnt 3-0

  12. the first half was a slight advantage for Milan, the second started with total pressure from Roma before the expulsion of Theo Milan had only one shot on goal from the imaginary penalty! no one knew how to present the Roma without expelling Theo and the imaginary penalty for them, the referee totally ruined the match

  13. Both penalties were legit penalties. Both were very soft penalties but fouls all the same. The referee would be crucified no matter what their decision is. Kjaer got the man, should’ve been a foul. Ibanez’s challenge looked fair on first viewing in real-time but when it was looked at again he didn’t seem to touch the ball at all.

  14. Also – Lupo – Milan have put in good performances under the respective conditions and have been unlucky to some degree in every game. Mourinho for some reason thinks the conference league is beneath him so he fielded a weak, tactically inept team and got humbled by part time players. Non siamo uguali.

  15. There was a clear penalty on Kjaer for handling the ball in injury time. Clear as day and VAR let it go with no review. This is the FIGC dictating who wins the league.

  16. Lupo, you know what? Our goal is to quialify for the top 4 as stated by the management and looks like we are well on track for this goal. We fought well for our champions leauge game performance and enjoyed the game vs liverpool even we lost. I hope you also enjoyed your game with Bodø/Glimt and can still find your spot in Europe next season although that Conference League seems a bit tough for you.

  17. Also I agree with Kam in that Veretout’s challenge on Tonali was naughty. Theo was stupid with his challenges, clumsy, misjudged but Veretout’s challenge was malicious and I don’t like to see red cards but in the context of the game and with the malicious intent it perhaps should’ve been a red.

  18. Milan still won the game. Biggest asset to Italian teams in recent years has been their ability to win ugly. Milan couldn’t do it for a long time, but now seem to be able to dig deep and fight for the result.

  19. Yeah, Milan is the real deal. No wonder a Liverpool team came back from 3 down to whoop their asses. Bunch of corrupt folks led by a corrupt politician. All ya’ll do is bribe refetees.

  20. So is it a legal move if I break someone’s legs with my tackle before getting to the ball?
Ibanez tripped Ibra heavily before having a slight touch on the ball. Hell, the ball didn’t even stop.
If it wasn’t an official game with pro players, you’d have seen two men go at it. It is deceitful and infuriating to take on people from the back

  21. @Plamen Go get brain surgery. You are being schizophrenic
Which match did you watch? Roma was getting r*ped in every hole.

  22. If you watch different angles (front angle) you can see Ibanez did not even get any touch on the ball. Clear penalty. Don’t know what these people are crying about?!!!

  23. If you watch different angles (front angle) you can see Ibanez did not even get any touch on the ball. Clear penalty. Don’t know what these people are crying about?!!!

  24. For real are we discussing if that pathetic contact is a penalty? Is this what we want for our game? The same for Juve against Inter, to call that a penalty is a joke. If this is our target for our great game I’am out as a fan of soccer.

I prefer VAR but the rules of the game must change. A contact is not equal to a penalty.
