Juventus were awarded a penalty following a VAR on-field review for a slight Ashley Young tug on Juan Cuadrado’s arm.

According to Italian sports papers the referee’s call was correct and Gianpaolo Calvarese immediately explained his decision to Inter captain Samir Handanovic.

Il Corriere dello Sport confirmed the call was correct, but wondered what would have happened with a different VAR referee as the Nerazzurri were not awarded a penalty kick back for a similar Botond Balogh foul on Ivan Perisic in Inter-Parma in November.

Italian media added Calvarese’s refereeing was not perfect because his use of yellow cards was a bit chaotic.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, those shown to Alex Sandro and Matteo Darmian were ‘questionable’ while Tuttosport claimed Arturo Vidal could have been booked for a second time after a foul on Weston McKennie in the second half.

Calvarese’s ratings:

La Gazzetta dello Sport: 6.5

Il Corriere dello Sport: 6.5

Tuttosport: 6.5
