Redknapp: ‘Manchester United needed Conte’

Jamie Redknapp believes Manchester United should have hired Antonio Conte as their coach: ‘They needed someone like him.’

The Italian tactician was linked with the Old Trafford job in October, but the Red Devils eventually decided to stick with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, offering Tottenham the chance to hire the former Inter and Juventus tactician.

Conte had rejected the Spurs job in the summer, only a few weeks after having left Inter by mutual consent.

However, he agreed to move to North London on an 18-month deal and signed his contract on November 2.

Manchester United eventually sacked Ole replacing him with Ralf Rangnick who lost his first game in charge of the Red Devils against Wolverhampton.

On the other hand, Conte is still unbeaten in eight Premier League games at Tottenham.

Former Premier League star Redknapp believes United should have hired the former midfielder when they had the chance.

“Why they didn’t get Antonio Conte when they could have done. They need someone like him,” he told Sky Sports UK as quoted by the Daily Mail.

“If you’re only there until the end of the season, you’re in there naked. The way he’s going now he won’t get another two years,” he added talking about Rangnick.

“If he wants to be there long-term he’s got a lot of decisions to make. There are a lot of players that he’s trying to shoehorn into the team.

“The ball should have got man of the match for Man United today because it had to do an incredible job to stay out there because everyone was given it away. When you look at it right now, they’re miles off it.”
