The Uruguayan spent 11 years with the Nerazzurri, and is fondly remembered for his knack of scoring spectacular goals, as evidenced by the rapturous welcome he received in the Milan derby.

“I hadn’t been back in Italy for a few years,” Recoba explained to Corriere dello Sport.

“I hadn’t been back ever since I moved to Greece. Fortunately the game went well, otherwise I wouldn’t be allowed back again!

“Moratti? I’ve been here for a while, but I haven’t seen him yet. I was his favourite, but it was a natural thing. I never asked anyone for anything. I repeat: it was natural.

“Javier Zanetti? When I came to Italy, I was with him constantly. Of course, he got up at around 7am, and I liked to sleep!

“It’s not true that I didn’t like to train though. Obviously I wasn’t like Javier, who could still train and play even now.”

It has been suggested that Recoba never truly lived up to his potential, despite his long stint with the Nerazzurri, but the 38-year-old doesn’t see it that way.

“It may well be true, but I wouldn’t know. I know what I did, and maybe some say it wasn’t enough. It was enough for me.

“I’ve always seen football in my own way. I’ll never become a Coach, because I’d only send out the talented ones, and that wouldn’t be possible as we’d lose too many goals.”
