The transfer saga drags on, as the Colombia international returned from a two-year loan at Bayern Munich and is eager to reunite with Carlo Ancelotti.

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis made clear that he has no intention of paying upfront and is reticent even to make it an obligation to buy.

“We are all prepared to make sacrifices for James Rodriguez, but we ask Real Madrid to make them too,” De Laurentiis told Sky Sport Italia.

“We’ve not given up, but in order to break the ice we need Madrid to consider that rather than have an unhappy player sitting around, they should send him out to play. Perhaps on loan.”

Now Spanish paper AS claim that Real Madrid would be prepared to spread out the payment, but there has to be some guarantee that Napoli will purchase at the end of the season.

Another loan with option to buy would be unacceptable to the Merengues.

The cost of the operation would also have to be €42m plus bonuses, whereas Napoli have so far offered a maximum of €42m between loan and option.
