Andrea Ranocchia described his first ever Serie A own goal and urged Inter to forget their 2-0 defeat to Genoa “or we’ll never progress.”
The defender wore the captain’s armband this evening, standing in for injured Joao Miranda, but was in the wrong place at the wrong time when a Milan Skriniar clearance ricocheted into the net off his knee.
“Let’s just say we could’ve done without that, but these things happen,” Ranocchia told Mediaset Premium.

“We had a good reaction and tried hard, but their second goal really knocked the wind out of our sails. We’ve got to get ourselves ready for the next game, as we need three points against Benevento.”
This was Ranocchia’s first ever Serie A goal at his 186th appearance in the Italian top flight.
“When it has to happen, it happens and there’s not much I can do about it. I think one own goal out of 186 games isn’t that bad, although obviously it’d be better if it was zero…
“It was a fast-paced move, Milan tried to clear it and the ball just hit my knee at that precise angle to ricochet like that. It’s disappointing, but that’s not the problem here.
“Missing Mauro Icardi and Ivan Perisic tonight mustn’t be an excuse either. We have to work hard, focus on the next match and remember there’s a long way to go this season.
“If we get stuck talking about this game, then we’ll never progress. It’s a long season, there’s a long-term objective, we must move on to the next match immediately.”
