Sampdoria coach Claudio Ranieri said the Derby della Lanterna against Genoa is ‘one of the best’ and warned ‘each Derby has its own story’.

The Blucerchiati have collected nine points from five games and sit five points above the Rossoblu ahead of the season’s first Derby della Lanterna.

But Ranieri, who has seen his side win four on the bounce, including the 1-0 win over Salernitana in the Coppa Italia, believes the Derby ‘resets everything’.

“Each Derby has its own story and resets everything,” Ranieri told the club’s official website. “There’s no one who is higher or lower in the table, or who is in one category or another.

“The beauty of the Derby is that you reset everything, you go on the pitch and you fight.”

The coach expects a tough game against Rolando Maran’s side and hailed the ‘two sets of fans’.

“Genoa are a team that has ideas, knows how to play and we must be very careful,” Ranieri added. “In many years of my career, I have participated in many derbies, both in Italy and abroad.

“There’s a pre-euphoria, because both sets of fans want to do something magical, great and beautiful as a choreography for their team.

“Therefore, I put this among the best I have participated in.”
