The Blucerchiati secured a 2-1 win against Inter on January 6, but were immediately grounded by newly promoted Spezia five days later.
Coach Ranieri spoke about the setback in the Liguria derby and claimed Samp show more ‘desire’ against the tougher opponents.
“When we play against the big teams, the lads feel the desire to do well,” Ranieri said at a press conference. “They help each other, they are more united and determined.
“Then we must add that the championship is very special for everything we have always said.”
Sampdoria face 15th-placed Udinese at the Marassi tomorrow, with four points separating the two.
“Udinese are very compact,” Ranieri added. “They know what they want.
“They don’t have the position they deserve; they are playing well. When they break, they know what they want.
“It will be a difficult match.”
