After he was linked with a return to Sampdoria, now Claudio Ranieri is named as a potential new coach for their city rivals Genoa.

The 71-year-old was fired by Watford in January, but has no real intention of retiring and is looking for the next challenge.

He had been repeatedly linked with Samp, where he was already in charge from October 2019 to June 2021, but seemed unimpressed with the project and above all the complete lack of stability at a club that is in talks for a takeover.

Instead, Sky Sport Italia transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio claims that Ranieri is tempted by a move to Marassi for Sampdoria’s rivals Genoa.

Unlike Samp, Genoa are playing in Serie B this season and struggling badly under coach Alexander Blessin.

The German was criticised not just for his results, but also for post-match comments last week in which he said his players seemed “like amateurs.”

It is widely reported Blessin will be sacked as soon as Genoa can find a replacement, having amassed only two points in five rounds.

Other candidates for Genoa include Nenad Bjelica and former SPAL boss Leonardo Semplici.
