It would be a return to Naples for Ranieri, who was already at the helm from 1991 to 1993.
He finished fourth in his debut campaign and was fired less than a year later.
There are also reports that Ranieri could be joined at Napoli by another former Juventus figure – Trezeguet.
The striker joined Hercules last summer and has made it very clear he wishes to walk away from the Spanish side.
The club has pledged to release him from his contract and agent Antonio Caliendo has repeatedly hinted that Trezeguet would love a new Serie A experience at Napoli.
The Partenopei appear to already have a deal in place for Slovenia international striker Tim Matavz.
“He will certainly be a Napoli player,” agent Silvano Martina told Napoli Magazine.
“As a striker he has great potential, so it's no coincidence all the Italian clubs wanted him. He was born in 1989 and has an incredible goal average. He is very powerful and yet extremely quick.”
