Claudio Ranieri has emerged as the favourite to take charge of Roma, but Fabio Capello wants Eusebio Di Francesco to see out the season.

Calciomercato.com reports Ranieri has ‘surpassed’ Christian Panucci in the running to succeed Di Francesco, whose position seems untenable after Roma’s Champions League exit to Porto on Wednesday.

The website explains that while Vice-President Mauro Baldissoni ‘already has a yes’ from ex-Bologna boss Roberto Donadoni, the squad are ‘pushing’ for Ranieri or Panucci.

Corriere dello Sport’s Nicolo Schira, meanwhile, claims the former Leicester City and Fulham manager is the ‘only’ candidate prepared to take over for the rest of the season as Paulo Sousa wants a contract until ‘at least 2020’.

The 66-year-old coached the Giallorossi between 2009 and 2011, but Capello hopes Di Francesco – who won a Scudetto with the Sky Sport Italia pundit in the early 2000s – is given the chance to turn things around.

“Di Francesco deserves to finish the season,” he told the broadcaster.

“No-one works miracles and there’s not much time between now and the end of the season.

"I hope Roma don’t appoint a new coach because Di Francesco was my player and I hope he’ll stay on for the rest of the season and gets the wins he deserves because he’s a sincere and prepared person.

“Like De Rossi said, in the next two games, which seem easy on paper, the team must show they’re playing for him. They need six points.”
