Claudio Ranieri believes Sampdoria were able to control Lazio thanks also to the more ‘experienced’ players they brought in this season.

The Blucerchiati put in a dominant performance from start to finish, securing the victory with goals from Fabio Quagliarella, Tommaso Augello and Mikkel Damsgaard.

“Naturally, Lazio were missing several important players, so it was not their best line-up, but we still played with real courage and confidence,” said Ranieri in his press conference.

“I think this 3-0 victory allows us to forget the defeat to Benevento. We signed some more experienced players this summer and want to avoid suffering the way we did last season.

“Players like Antonio Candreva, Adrien Silva and Keita Balde raised the quality of the squad and above all these are players who know what they need to do at the top level.”

Samp also have some intriguing young players, such as Morten Thorsby, who made life very difficult for Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

“Thorsby is a player who some people don’t like, but you need someone to do the hard work in a team,” continued Ranieri.

“He never stops running, he works on behalf of his teammates and a coach loves someone like that. Augello’s goal is also a reward for his humility and sacrifice, as he earned his place in the team.”
