“I talked to Candreva during the team meeting, I decided not to call him up and now we’ll see what line-up I choose,” Ranieri told the official Sampdoria website.

“I make my choices, as always, the night before, so this evening I’ll have a good think about everything and see how to set out the team.”

It’s not clear what happened with Candreva, but it’s reported the former Inter winger didn’t have the right attitude in training.

It is also a way of sending a signal to the other Sampdoria players that they are not guaranteed their places and need to step up the intensity after a run of poor results.

“We mustn’t think about victories or defeats, but about facing one team at a time. I maintain our performance against Napoli was very good, so we lost, but we went close.

“Now Verona are another side in good shape, who are aggressive and don’t give you time to breathe. That means we need to be very quick and very practical.

“I consider Verona to be the surprise of last season and still a real revelation this time. Ivan Juric is doing a remarkable job. They play a bit like Atalanta, one-on-one all over the pitch and don’t let you breathe. The lads have been warned, we saw the video of their matches and know we’ve got to keep the tempo up both physically and mentally.”
