Claudio Ranieri is reportedly close to a return to work at Serie B side Cagliari, who fired coach Fabio Liverani, while Brescia also dismissed their boss.

Serie B has continued throughout the 2022 World Cup in Qatar while Serie A took a break, so this has also seen the merry-go-round of managers keep spinning at its usual pace too.

This week alone, Cagliari have fired Liverani and Brescia pulled the plug on Pep Clotet.

According to Sportitalia, Ranieri is the hot favourite for the Sardinian job and has basically given the all-clear to striking a deal.

This represents a return for the 71-year-old, who had already been at the helm of the Sardinian side from 1988 to 1991, taking them to promotion from Serie C.

His most recent job was at Watford in the Premier League, lasting just 14 games before he was sacked in January 2022.

Ranieri’s last Serie A role was at Sampdoria from October 2019 to January 2021.
