Claudio Ranieri, alongside club President Tommaso Giulini, led his squad of Cagliari players in tribute at the Unipol Domus on Tuesday afternoon, where the late Gigi Riva is currently lying in rest.

Riva, Italy’s all-time leading goalscorer, died at a hospital in Cagliari on Monday, January 22, 2024.

He had been hospitalised earlier that day following a stroke, but had reportedly refused surgery, doctors told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Plenty of tributes to Riva have already begun to flood in from the likes of former Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro, ex-striker Roberto Baggio and legendary coach Arrigo Sacchi.

On Tuesday, Cagliari’s full squad of players, led by their coach Ranieri and their club President visited the stadium, where Riva’s body is lying in rest. La Gazzetta dello Sport have also posted videos of the players arriving at the stadium.

Riva spent the vast majority of his career with Cagliari, leading the Rossoblu to their only ever Serie A title in 1969-70. His 205 goals in all competitions is also the club’s all-time record.
