Former Tottenham, Cagliari and Switzerland defender Ramon Vega gives his verdict on Granit Xhaka’s possible move to Roma and warns Italy about Breel Embolo.

Switzerland face Italy at the Stadio Olimpico this evening in the second game of their group stage of Euro 2020.

“I was disappointed by Switzerland against Wales. I had big expectations in this tournament, I thought they even had the quality to go as far as the quarter-finals or the semifinals,” the former defender told the Italian Football Podcast.

Breel Embolo’s goal against Wales was not enough for Switzerland to pick up all three points.

“He is a fantastic striker; strong, powerful and he showed he could score. He will be a huge threat to the Italians,” Vega said.

“Embolo showed excellent signs against Wales about his potential for his career. If he can do the same against Italy, I am sure that one of the big clubs will try to sign him because he has the strength and the power and speed.

“He needs the players around to assist him so he can utilize these qualities.

“There are no doubts that Italy are the favourites to win. Italy should win the game. Switzerland will have to play at their very, very best to get a result.”

Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka is reportedly on the verge of joining Roma.

“Xhaka had ups and downs at Arsenal. He wasn’t a tremendous success. He is a quality player but his overall character and attitude he needed to learn at Arsenal,” the 50-year-old claimed.

“For him to move to Roma with Mourinho, I think it will be a good move. He will change the environment around him, which hasn’t been the best at Arsenal in the last few years.

“This is his last chance pretty much to shine at the international level.”
