Rafael Leao’s father admits he is ‘working’ on a contract extension with Milan but keeps all doors open regardless of potential interests from Chelsea, Barcelona or Real Madrid.

The Portugal international is in talks to extend his contract with Milan beyond 2024.

The Rossoneri wanted to reach an agreement before the start of the World Cup, but have missed the first deadline, so negotiations will continue in January.

“We are working on it [Milan’s contract extension],” Antonio Leao told Portuguese paper Record.

Chelsea have set their sights on the 23-year-old who has a €150m clause included in his contract. However, the Blues made an attempt to sign Leao this past August when the clause had already expired.

“Until the expiration in 2024, we deal with everything, it’s not necessarily about Chelsea, Barcelona or Real Madrid,” the striker’s father added.

“He [Leao] loves staying in Italy and has. He has a predilection for Italians, the one the Portuguese don’t have for him.

“He was named Best Serie A Player last season, not because he looks pretty, but simply because he is the best.”

Leao has been included in Portugal’s 26-man squad for Qatar 2022.

According to reports in Italy, Milan fear that positive performances at the World Cup would make Leao’s salary requests unaffordable, while the 23-year-old reportedly expects the Rossoneri to cover part of a €19m fine he owes to his former club Sporting CP for terminating his contract unilaterally in 2018.

Leao has scored seven goals in 20 appearances across all competitions this season, including one in the last Serie A match of the year against Fiorentina at San Siro.

  5. “Until the expiration in 2024, we deal with everything” – no, until the summer 2023, then he should be sold if no deal by then. Better to get what we can rather than let him walk for free. I swear if they let another valuable player go for free…
