Rafael Leao was sent off for a second bookable offence as Milan took on Sampdoria, which means he is suspended for the Scudetto showdown with Napoli.

The first card was shown after 17 minutes for shoving Bartosz Bereszynski with an elbow while trying to shake off the close marking, although that seemed a little harsh.

The second was straight after the half-time break as Leao attempted an overhead kick and instead shinned Alex Ferrari in the head, not realising the defender was behind him.

In both cases, Leao was more reckless or clumsy than malicious, but the two incidents put together resulted in a red card.

He wanted to remain on the field until he was sure that Ferrari was alright and able to continue, albeit bandaged up.

The Portuguese talent will now be suspended for next week’s Serie A clash with Napoli, as the red card cannot be appealed.

Being two bookable offences rather than a straight red, it is likely to be just a one-match ban.
